Perceptibility of environmental sounds by earphone wearers listening to pop and rock music

(in English) To examine how the perceptibility of environmental sounds would be affected by listening to music through earphones, the hearing thresholds for pure tones presented by a loudspeaker were measured. In the condition where the listener wore canalphones,thresholds were considerably higher than in the condition where the listener’s ears were open. When pseudo-music signals were presented through the canalphones at the level of 70 dBA, the hearing threshold at 2 kHz was almost70 dB higher than the absolute threshold. The shield effects of earphones and canalphones were measured by using the probemicrophone that was inserted in the listener’s ear canal. In the case of the canalphone, the shield effect was found to be almost
30 dB at about 2 kHz.
