Opposite Impression Terms Related to Sound and Music

(in English) In the evaluation of sound quality from the viewpoint of listener satisfaction, it is important to assess both the acoustical features and the listener’s feeling. In this report, we try to evaluate the impression of sound from two points of view: the physical feature and the psychological feeling. At first, we collected opposite terms by a questionnaire. Here, opposite terms included two meanings. For instance one opposite of “powerful” is “delicate” regarding physical features and the other is “too loud” regarding feeling. Next, a subjective evaluation experiment of musical impressions using these opposites was conducted. The evaluation depended on combination of these opposites and the sound sources. The impressions were plotted in two- dimensional method. The result showed the traditional pairs of evaluation term, for instance “powerful” and “unsatisfying,” were pairs of opposites of both meanings. And the value is influenced by not only acoustical feature but also listener’s feeling.
