Indoor power line communication (PLC) is an attractive way to realize an in-home network. The bit-loaded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is effective for PLC to achieve high bit rate by optimizing subcarrier modulations and code rate of a forward error correcting (FEC) code. The precise CNR information for each subcarrier should be estimated for achieving high bit rate. In particular, the subcarrier CNR information should be done within a short pilot symbol length because streaming services of voice and video are provided on
in-home PLC. At first, this manuscript shows that the precise subcarrier CNR estimation for all the range of SNR cannot be achieved within the target pilot symbol length. Next, we propose three methods to achieve target BER within the target pilot-symbol length. First one is to smooth the estimated subcarrier CNR curve, second one is to give a margin of subcarrier CNR threshold for determining subcarrier modulation, and last one is to minimize the estimated subcarrier CNR locally. As a result of evaluating these three proposed methods, it is shown that the local minimization can achieve the best performances among them. Furthermore, we show the relationship between the pilot symbol length and the range of local minimization. |
