Acceleration of Learning Process of Self-Organizing Maps Using Asymmetric Neighborhood Functions

(in English) In primary sensory cortices, there exists a significant ordered structure called a topographic map. The self-organizing map (SOM) is an unsupervised neural network model which was developed to explain the spontaneous formation of a topographic map in the brain. In this model, topological defects appearing during learning is a major problem, because such defects delay the ordering process of the map. In this study, we show that the asymmetric neighborhood functions can eliminate topological defects and thus accelerate the ordering process of the model.
