Numerical investigation of electromagnetic radiation from current-biased intrinsic Josephson junctions

(in English) In order to investigate Terahertz radiation from Bi-2212 intrinsic Josephson Junctions under a bias current flow, we have performed a numerical simulation of radiation properties of junction stacks with two different sizes; a number of junctions and junction length. For the three-junction stack with its length of $0.026\lambda_c$, $\lambda_c$ being the c-axis magnetic penetration depth, distinct voltage jumps indicating in-phase and out-of-phase cavity resonance of the Josephson plasma occurred in the return curve of an I-V characteristic, and a radiation power of emitting waves reached the maximum in a bias region corresponding to the in-phase resonance. Moreover, the emitting waves generated by the in-phase resonance exhibited monochromatic spectra, compared with those generated by the out-of-phase resonance. On the other hand, for the 50-junction stack with $0.321\lambda_c$, the radiation power was significantly enhanced by the in-phase resonance, while the increase in power suppressed in bias regions corresponding to the out-of-phase resonances with the low plasma-velocity modes. The maximum power was approximately 150 higher than that of the three-junction stack. These facts are useful for designing a Terahertz oscillator using the intrinsic Josephson junctions.
