Proposal of Heterogeneous Uncoupled and Homogeneous Coupled Multicore Fibers for Space/Mode-Division Multiplexing

(in English) Owing to the demand of traffic capacity increase of optical fiber network, a breakthrough in the transmission capacity per fiber is needed in the near future. We propose two types of novel multi-core fibers to drastically increase the transmission capacity of single fiber. These are a homogeneous coupled multicore fiber (homogeneous coupled MCF) and a heterogeneous uncoupled multicore fiber (heterogeneous uncoupled MCF). In the homogeneous MCF, identical cores are closely arranged so that the cores are strongly coupled to each other to form coupled modes, each of which corresponds to a transmission channel. In the heterogeneous MCF, cores have two or three different types of index contrast and index profile to prevent mutual coupling among cores. In both types of MCF’s, the number of transmission channels is increased to the number of cores. A novel mode multi/demultiplexer is proposed to discriminate each coupled mode. To rearrange cores to match the mode multi/demultiplexer, a hybrid configuration of coupled homogeneous with uncoupled heterogeneous multicore is proposed.
