Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The use of multi-level modulation formats is one of the most effective ways of enhancing the spectral efficiency in optical fiber communication systems. Quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) is the best candidate among various modulation formats, because we can minimize the power penalty due to the increase in the level of modulation. However, such QAM signals require higher power to maintain the symbol distance on the complex plane. In contrast, the maximum optical power that can be launched into the fiber is strictly limited by fiber nonlinearity. In this paper, we demonstrate 1,000-km transmission of 1- and 3-ch 40-Gbit/s 16-QAM signals, and investigate the impact of nonlinear effects in such a system.
