In a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) where the cladding air holes have been filled with metallic nanowires, the core guided mode can be coupled with surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on the metallic nanowires. A study on metal-filled polarization-maintaining PCFs has been reported for optical fibers which have polarization-dependent charasteristics, and the PCFs are expected to be applicable as polarizers, however, the reported PCFs do not have sufficient performance for polarizers. Moreover, there has not been any reports of concrete design methods for polarizers based on metal-filled PCFs. In this work, we investigate the propagation characteristics of PCFs selectively filled with metallic nanowires into cladding air holes through a full-vector modal solver based on the finite element method (FEM). We show that it is possible to design metal-filled polarizers with sufficient performance by introducing several metallic nanowires in lines. |
