Bilateral asymmetry of galvanic skin reflex signal

(in English) Humans and animals respond to stress through hormonal and nervous systems. Sympathetic nerves play more important role in the exposure to sudden strain. These responses are implicitly considered to arise symmetrically in a body, however little has been reported about this symmetry and/or asymmetry. Galvanic skin response (GSR) signals that are considered to reflect the sympathetic nervous activity are measured from both palms during a mental arithmetic task. Results show that appearances of GSR changes are not the same though the changes are not necessarily reproducible even in the same subject. This asymmetric response is also observed in a cold-water experiment. We need to be careful and thoughtful in making an interpretation of these results and to consider further in combination with experimental methods.
