Study on Functions of Auditory Signs for the Blind

(in English) Results for travel experiments with blind people show that usual guide signs such as guide blocks, auditory signs, and others, for assisting their travel are not always effective. In this report, we focus upon auditory messages for guiding toilet rooms at a railway station. We discuss certain issues of the functions for auditory messages together with other factors such as user characteristics, use situation, and spatial features. We use the concept of perceived world of individuals: A perceived world constructed by a blind traveller; and the other for a designer, or a sighted person. We point out that one of key issues for designing effective auditory messages is recognition of the user’s perceived world including the process of travel (O&M, orientation and mobility). In the report, we also show certain basic approaches to the design issues.
