With the advance of power semiconductor devices, power electronics technologies using such switching devices have been spreading into not only industrial field such as electric trains and locomotions, but also commercial use as fluorescent lights and air conditioners. Switching is quite low-loss since the voltage or current of the switching device is zero so switching can make power control with high efficiency.
For radio equipment, class-D, -E, and -F amplifiers use the switching technologies. However, these amplifiers cannot amplify linear modulation signals. On the other hand, switching can be seen as a kind of sampling if the switching frequency is around or greater than the signal bandwidth
that is to be processed by switching. Therefore, in such cases, the voltage or current of RF signals can be controlled continuously with the ON-OFF duty control just like the power switching control.
In this presentation, applications of the switching for radio equipment are presented. Especially, the applications for fast antenna switching
and envelope or amplitude modulation are shown, and their features and problems are discussed. |
