Markovian Property of Scale-Free Networks: Its Implications and Experimental Verification

(in English) Many networks found in the real world have a tendency that small-degree nodes are more likely to be connected to large-degree nodes. Such correlation among the degree of neighbor nodes is called degree correlation. When a network is characterized by degree distribution and degree correlation between two adjacent nodes, we define that the network is Markovian. In this paper, we analyze the characteristics of Markovian networks and develop analysis formulae of their clustering coefficient, assortativity coefficient and other properties. Based on the formulae obtained, we propose a method of determining whether a network is Markovian. Then, we examine actual data on the router-level topology of several Internet-service providers. Finally, we find that the router-level topologies examined remain strongly degree-correlated with nodes a few hops away, which disagrees with Markovian property. Furthermore, their clustering coefficients are larger than Markovian-property-assumed calculation. This suggests that the router-level topology of the Internet has strong connectivity among local nodes.
