Detection of optical flow based on local motion signals detected by spatiotemporal Gabor filter

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) When we move to a target position in the presence of moving objects, we must judge their heading (or direction of self-motion) to avoid collision with the objects. For example, when we drive a car, we must avoid collision with an oncoming car or a person. Heading can be estimated by the velocity distribution of optical flow, which occurs by self-motion. When we move forward or backward, expansive or contractive motion having velocity gradients occurs across the visual field. The center of the expansion or contraction corresponds to heading. To detect the center of expansive or contractive optical flow, local motion directions must be detected and integrated. To detect local motion, we used spatiotemporal Gabor filter, a model of the simple cell in the visual cortex. Because velocity of objects depends on their distance from the observer when moving forward or backward, smooth velocity gradients in expansive or contractive optical flow do not exist in natural image sequences. To detect velocity gradients, a maximum filter which extracts maximum velocity in a limited area was applied to local velocity distributions. By using this method, heading was robustly estimated from optical flow.
