Hole assisted fiber (HAF) with enlarged effective core area (Aeff) and less than half nonlinearity of standard SMFs (ITU-T G.652 compliant) is investigated as a fiber compatible with standard SMFs. Fabricated fiber based on simulation results has Aeff of 180$\micro$m^2, reduced n2 and larger dispersion coefficient, simultaneously while ensuring single mode transmission at 1550nm. The core refractive index difference of fabricated fiber is reduced to 0.1%. Therefore, GeO^2 concentration is 1/3 of that of standard SMFs and nonlinear coefficient n2/Aeff is estimated to a low value of 1.5x10^-10 W^-1. This nonlinearity corresponds to about 40% of that of standard SMFs. Moreover, it is confirmed that these HAFs can be spliced by commercially available splicer and low splice losses of about 0.20dB at 1550nm on average with fabricated HAFs are obtained. |
