In-situ observation of wear track on slip ring with SEM

(in English) Satellites have slip rings in its components like solar array drive mechanism and antenna drive mechanism to transmit electrical power and signals.A slip ring is required to have low wear rate in order to achieve long life and to have low electrical resistance and low noise in terms of highly-reliable signal/power transfer. While investigation of materials which meet these demands have been progressing, it has not been clarified yet in which mechanism the outbreak of the noise and the increase of the friction torque occur. To answer this question, in-situ observation of the surfaces of the rings and the bruses during vacuum friction test is conducted and it reveals that transfer process of wear debris on brush surface caused the increase of friction torque.
