FPGA-based Reconfigurable GPS Receiver Development for Space Applications
Takuji Ebinuma, Chunming Fan (Tokyo Univ. of Marine Science and Tech.) SANE2009-106
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Many space missions today benefits greatly from the use of the Global Positioning System (GPS) for accurate positioning and timing. Space-qualified GPS receivers, however, are often too expensive for low-cost platforms, such as micro satellites and sounding rockets. It is also prohibited for the users to freely access to the signal processing algorithms of the receiver to add mission specific functions. To address the need of affordable and configurable GPS tracking systems for future space missions, an FPGA-based reconfigurable GPS receiver has been developed. It is based on the Namuru II GPS receiver development platform designed by the University of New South Wales. The Namuru II is fully reconfigurable, and all the GPS baseband signal processing blocks and a micro-controller can be embedded in a single Altera FPGA. It also supports dual-antenna configuration and can be applicable to GPS occultation and reflectometry missions. This paper describes the adaptations of the Namuru II receiver firmware for low Earth orbit and high dynamic applications. The dual-antenna implementation for GPS reflectometry is also discussed.
