(in English) Predicting rules of difficulty in discriminating bi-syllabic Chinese tones were investigated, in order to compile the word list properly in a CAI self-teaching system developed by the present authors. Observed data were ratio of incorrect answer by Japanese college students for each syllable in bi-syllabic words with all the combinations of the four tones. Rules of predicting the observed data utilized 1) properties of confusion among voice pitch patterns in bi-syllabic tones, 2) ill effects of kinds of consonants and vowels involved in each syllable, 3) unclearness of the utterance of speech presented in the system, and 4) degree of unfamiliarity of the words. By applying these rules to the linear multi-regression model, accuracy of predicting high enough for practical use was obtained.
