This technical report addresses hardware neuron models qualitatively replicating action potentials which are considered as a unit of neural information. Originally, Yagi and Hoshimiya proposed a hardware excitable membrane model (YH circuit model) composed of a voltage source, resistors, capacitors and bipolar transistors. Sekine improved the YH circuit model using field effect transistors (FET). Maeda also improved it to an autonomic bursting oscillation model that repeats alternately the active and silent phases, and furthermore, to a relaxation oscillation model that keeps the potential plateau during the absolute refractory period. From many observations of dynamics shown by these models, we summarized that the action potentials with including the plateau, which often observed in cardiac cells, showed the acceleration effect driven by low energy consumption when the models were coupled by the gap junctions each other. On the other hand, we also summarized that the sharp action potentials, which often observed in neurons, showed diverse dynamics including chaos by means of consuming energy necessary for information processing when the models were coupled by unidirectional synapses each other. |
