We propose a method for detecting vehicle positions and their movements even in poor visibility conditions such as fog, snowfall, night, rain and so on using thermal images. First we indicate that an infrared thermography camera offers high contrast images even in poor visibility conditions, and the vehicles in the thermal images can be seen clearly. Secondly we propose an image processing method combined pattern recognition with spatio-temporal image processing for the thermal images. Proposed method specifies vehicle positions, and also classifies their movements into the three categories: stopped vehicles, low speed ones, and high speed ones. Finally the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by the experiments using real traffic images. |
