Investigation of optical buffers based on polarization bistable VCSELs for high switching-speed operation

(in English) Ultrafast operation of all-optical buffer memories based on the polarization bistability of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) requires elaborate tuning of the carrier frequency and peak power of the input optical signals. We devised a method to estimate the operating windows of VCSEL-based optical memories, and characterized those of a 980-nm VCSEL for input data rates from 10 to 20 Gb/s. The measured result indicates that our VCSEL is ready for 20-Gb/s memory operation. We explained the measured polarization-switching characteristics successfully through numerical analyses based on a two–mode rate equation model. We predict that faster memory operation as 40 Gb/s will be possible by using a VCSEL with a low Q factor.
