Comparison of color naming properties of dichromats in the aperture and surface color modes

(in English) We investigated effects of background stimuli on categorical color perception of dichromats (protanopes and deuteranopes) using categorical color naming experiments under the aperture and surface color appearance modes. In the results, the dichromats showed relatively robust color naming similarly to trichromats in the surface color mode as shown in previous research, while in the aperture mode color naming of the dichromats was less stable. These results suggest that background stimuli have a role in making categorical color perception of dichromats more stable. However, the dichromats showed trichromatic color naming properties even in the aperture color modes and the properties cannot be explained only by responses of two classes of cones, suggesting that some color information other than that from responses of dichromats’residual cones also support their color naming ability.
