Limitation of the Proactive Routing Protocol for MANETs

(in English) We study the scalability of OLSR and OLSRv2, which are the proactive routing protocols for MANETs (Mobile Ad-hoc NETworks).Since the multi point relays (MPRs) advertise topology-control (TC) messages regularly by flooding in OLSR or OLSRv2, the number of TC messages received by one node linearly increases as the number of nodes increases. The number of TC messages increases in proportion to the size of region where OLSR or OLSRv2 works because nodes should exist with at least the critical density to ensure the connectivity in physical layer. Thus, OLSR and OLSRv2 respectively have their limitations on the size of region; they do not work properly due to the congestion caused by the TC messages in a region of size greater than the limitations. Through simulation experiments, we quantitatively clarify this kind of limitations of OLSR and OLSRv2.
