Listeners' ability to learn unfamiliar musical scales -- Some scales are easy, but others are difficult --

(in English) Previous studies showed that human has a biological preference for consonance intervals over dissonance intervals. Also, human perceives simpler ratios of frequencies of the two pitches as being more consonance. For these reasons, it is no wonder that a scale containing Perfect 5th (2:3) and Perfect 4th (3:4) across cultures is ubiquitous. This study examined whether it might be difficult to learn a scale containing neither P5 nor P4. The results of Experiment 1 showed that compared with a scale containing both P5 and P4, a scale containing neither of them was more difficult to learn. Subsequent experiments confirmed that the results of Experiment 1 were not derived from extraneous factors (Experiment 2) and a psychological similarity with participants’ already-acquired scale schema (Experiment 3). These results suggest that human has a difficulty of leaning a scale containing neither P4 nor P5 on the basis of nature than nurture.
