An investigation of relationship between beauty appreciation and usefulness judgment: An ERP study

(in English) The relationship between beauty appreciation and usefulness judgment was investigation using event-related potentials. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three instruction conditions: observation, beauty appreciation and usefulness judgment. Meaningless geometrical shapes were used as to-be-judged stimuli. Participants were also given two classification tasks at the end of the experiment (beauty – not beauty and useful – not useful). The results showed that both beauty appreciation and useful judgment share a preattentive process (reflected in N2), which distract an observer’s attention toward the stimuli. The difference in latency for the late positive potential showed that beauty appreciation is a sustained process, while useful judgment recruits an attention-allocation process, which is necessary to determine which part of the stimuli is of use with respect to task demands.
