A grating coupler is an effective element for coupling light between waveguides and external elements such as optical fibers or PDs. For the grating coupler, it is important to achieve a polarization-independent, high coupling efficiency. In this report, we explain that the efficiency higher than 70% is available for both TE and TM modes in the grating coupler for coupling between an SOI waveguide and a surface mounted PD by means of FDTD simulation. we also show the characteristics of coupling including wavelength dependence. |
