Motion lines are effective cue to represent the direction, trajectory, appearance and a sense of speed of motion of objects. In comics, motion lines are often used with onomatopoeias to increase the effectiveness to transmit the motion information. In this research, we investigated how pictorial information (motion line) and linguistic information (onomatopoeia) integrated in the determination of a sense of speed by multiple linear regression analysis based on the data from magnitude estimation method. The results showed that the total judgment of a sense of speed depended on the magnitude of incongruity between the pictorial information (motion line) and linguistic information (onomatopoeia). When senses of speed based on the pictorial and linguistic information were similar or incongruent, total impression was determined only by the linguistic information, and when the incongruity was middle, it was determined by the pictorial and linguistic information weighted. It suggests that there is a process to compare the pictorial and linguistic images, to weight and to contribute to the determination of a total sense of speed. |
