[Invited Talk] Review and Prospect of Assistive Technology for Visually Impaired and Blind Bersons

(in English) This paper reviewed Technical Reports of IEICE which were presented in Technical Committee WIT for the last ten years (1999-2009) and dealt with assistive technology for visually impaired and blind persons. The most dominant theme was technologies assisting the use of personal computers; 30 percent of the reviewed reports handled it. Among them, 40 percent studied Web accessibility. Followings were technologies assisting mobility and navigation, braille, input interfaces, and speech. Researches for the assist of deaf and blind persons were presented in a big number whereas only a few researches for low vision were reported. Many research results became available on the market as well as freely on the Web. Based on this review, the second author, a user of these assistive technologies, described future expectations in this research field.
