Development of gel-based EEG electrode for brain-machine interface Shigeru Toyama, Kouji Takano, Shirou Ikegami, Kenji Kansaku (NRCD) OME2009-70 |

An electro-conductive hydro gel to use for EEG electrode for Brain Machine Interface (BMI) has been developed. Although several conductive materials were applied, the conductive gel consisting of carboxymethyl celrose and calcium chloride exhibited desirable characteristics. The gel showed superior conductivity, wettability, and elasticity, and also it was produced by a simple mixing process. The gel attached on the head skin by penetrating through the hair when the gel-loaded electrode was pressured on a head, due to its elasticity. The impedance between the electrodes was sufficiently low for BMI use. Furthermore, it was not necessary to wash hair after removal of the gel. |
