This paper investigates the throughput performance of the proposed predetermined-rate automatic repeat request (ARQ) using hierarchical modulation assuming the turbo coding and incremental redundancy as a packet combining. In the proposed ARQ, the hierarchical modulation (superposition coding) is used for multiplexing initial and retransmission packets in order to achieve the retransmission without changing the transmission bandwidth, transmission power, and data rate. Thus, the proposed method is especially appropriate for point-to-multipoint communication. From the computer simulation results, the proposed ARQ achieves higher throughput than that without retransmission or with the conventional ARQ scheme, which transmits initial and retransmission packet exclusively, at the higher signal-to-noise power ratio (SNR) environment regardless of the number of receiver terminals. Furthermore, the proposed ARQ can reduce the required SNR for a target throughput by approximately 1 dB compared to the predetermined-rate ARQ based on the spectrum separation. |
