This paper reports investigations associated with a broadband circularly polarized patch antenna using an artificial ground (AG) structure as reflector. Removing vias from the popular mushroom-like EBG (Electromagnetic Band-gap) structure results in the AG with in-phase reflection characteristics in a specific band. The truncated patch antenna placed on the AG structure attains broadband characteristics in measured input impedance and axial ratio of 54.6 % and 26.6 %, respectively. The bandwidth enhancement is investigated by using the current and electromagnetic field distribution on the metal patches of the AG structure. Furthermore, the mutual coupling in an arrayed structure is investigated. The studies revealed that the mutual coupling between the antennas can be reduced if an EBG structure is inserted between them. |
