On a Directional MAC Protocol using Combinations of Beam Patterns

(in English) Recently, medium access control (MAC) protocols for ad hoc networks using smart antennas are presented. Smart antennas can improve the network capacity by electronically controlling the directivity of the main lobe and null points. Most of researches focus on controlling the main lobe to the destined node. However, since interference from other nodes incurs degradation of throughput, null steering to enhance SINR is also significant challenge. In this paper, we discuss the use of beam patterns with both the main lobe and the null point. First, we calculate some beam patterns with the both main lobe and the null point in the case of ESPAR antenna. Next, we propose a MAC protocol using the beam patterns with the both main lobe and the null point. In the proposed MAC protocol, a receive node can obtain a high gain toward its transmitter by the main lobe and can reduce the interference from other communications by the null point; we expect that the proposed protocol is a promising technique to improve throughput performance.
