Combination of External Phase Modulation and Synthesis of Optical Coherence Function for Improvement of Spatial Resolution in Long-length FBG Sensing System

(in English) External phase modulation is newly combined with the synthesis of optical coherence function for improvement of spatial resolution in distributed sensing system using a long-length fiber Bragg grating. It is possible to know the Bragg wavelength distribution along a long-length FBG by measuring local reflection spectra inside the grating, and this technique can be applied to a distributed sensing of strain and temperature. The spatial resolution of sensing systems based on synthesis of optical coherence function is inversely proportional to the optical power spectrum band-width of the light source. Therefore, we newly introduced external optical phase modulation to enlarge the bandwidth of the lightwave. The spatial resolution is improved from previously-reported 9.8 mm to 4.0 mm.
