Although the mechanisms involved remain unclear, several studies have reported that bone-conducted ultrasound (BCU) is even perceived by the profoundly sensorineural deaf, who hardly sense sounds even with conventional hearing aids, as well as normal-hearing subjects. We have objectively proven that the BCU perception by the profoundly deaf using magentoencephalography (MEG). Furthermore, we have identified both the characteristics and the neurophysiological mechanism of BCU perception using psychological, neurophysiological and physical approaches, and developed a BCU hearing aid (BCUHA) for the profoundly deaf. |
