To extend transmission distance of PON systems, many studies are focusing on improving the loss budget of the systems by using optical amplifiers.
Although this approach has a merit in that the transmission
distance can be extended without dependence on signal bit rates and transmission protocols, it has a problem that
burst input signals with different optical powers induce optical surges.
So far, we have been developing burst-mode
optical amplifiers which can suppress optical surge generations against upstream signal inputs of PON systems.
In this paper, considering the impact of the optical amplifier noises on the upstream signals of PON systems and the optical amplifier tolerance to burst signal inputs, we clarify the applicable areas of the burst-mode optical amplifiers for GE-PON and 10G-EPON systems. |
