Acceleration and Accuracy Evaluation of OSEM Reconstruction on the GPU

(in English) This paper proposes a fast method for the ordered subsets-expectation maximization (OSEM) algorithm on the graphics processing unit (GPU), aiming at achieving fast PET reconstruction. The proposed method is based on the symmetry and SIMD-based projection-backprojection (SSP) algorithm, which reduces the time complexity using four geometric symmetry properties in the computation. We focus on the volume axis perpendicular to projection lines in order to realize parallel memory access suitable to the GPU. We also reduce processing workloads inside the GPU by using texture interpolation. As an experimental result, we find that exploiting two symmetry properties achieves the highest performance. This performance is 1.4 times faster than a multi-core CPU-based implementation optimized using SSE instructions. We also confirm that our method can be used in practical situations because 99\% of voxels have the same value as those obtained from the CPU-based implementation.
