A Microwave Propagation Loss in a Ground Crack

(in English) As it was found that crashed rocks radiate microwaves, it is predicted that microwaves are radiated from the ground in an earthquake. Concerning with this prediction, microwave propagation in the ground is important. This paper describes the study results on propagation loss through a ground crack. As a first step, a microwave propagation loss in a rectangular crack is investigated. Propagation loss in rectangular with dimension 110×55mm and 220×220mm cracks are measured. The measured results agree well with the calculated results using FDTD method. Next, propagation losses of rectangular cracks with larger sizes, with moisture contents, with a bend and with a microwave source of a wire are investigated. From these results, it is shown that there is a possibility of the very low loss of the microwave propagation through ground crack.
