Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In this report, to clarify the mechanism of olfactory information processing in human brain, we investigated the relationship between sensory evaluation and EEG response when a peach (pleasant) smell or a putrid (unpleasant) smell was delivered to the human. 10 healthy men were participated. The subjects were instructed to evaluate the pleasant/unpleasant level and the odor magnitude for each odor stimulus. EEG was also recorded during the same level/magnitude odor stimulation. According to the grand mean waveform, positive potentials were observed at latency around 750 msec and 500 msec in pleasant and in unpleasant smell condition, respectively. Despite of using the same level/magnitude odor in sensory evaluation, a quick response observed in unpleasant smell condition suggested that the putrid smell might be recognized as a dangerous smell for human.
