We are investigating display technologies for a Super Hi-Vision system. We have already developed a high-dynamic-range projector that features dual modulation of light, which has 7680×4320 pixels and extremely high dynamic range of about 1.1-million to 1. We conducted a subjective evaluation to examine the degradation of image quality due to the limited dynamic range of a display by using the high-dynamic-range projector. The results indicate that the dynamic range of at least 1000:1 is necessary for displaying natural images and the dynamic range
of about 30000:1 is necessary for displaying special images which have low average picture levels when images are displayed in a large screen. |
