Locomotor activities of Mongolian gerbil driven by species-specific vocalization

(in English) In this study, we investigated functions of species-specific calls in Mongolian gerbils by measuring their locomotor activities when they received species-specific playbacked calls. The examinations were performed on an 8-arm radial maze, and acoustic stimuli were delivered from a loudspeaker located on the extension of the end of each arm. The auditory stimuli included Greeting calls, Screaming calls, Agonistic calls, and cage noises. Greeting calls were observed when a gerbil met with another gerbil. Since the calls were emitted in the situation like greeting, we considered that Greeting calls reflected their positive state. On the other hand, Screaming calls might reflected their negative state. Therefore, it was hypothesized that presentations of Greeting calls would induce approaching behavior to the sound source, whereas Screaming calls induce escaping behavior from the sound source. As results, no preference was observed during playbacks of Greeting calls, whereas gerbils escaped from the sound source during presentation of Screaming calls. These results suggested that Screaming calls were used to warn cage mates to run away.
