Temporal integration of auditory and visual information in AI neurons of awake gerbil

(in English) How the audio-visual information is integrated in neuronal level has been still largely unknown. We investigated the neural activities of neurons in the primary auditory cortex (AI) of awake gerbils. The responses to the auditory and visual stimuli were recorded electrophysiologically. Tone bursts (as auditory stimuli) and a flashing LED (as a visual stimulus) were presented to the left side of awake gerbil, and neurons of the right AI were recorded. We found the neurons whose auditory responses were affected (excitatory or inhibitory) by a visual stimulus and neurons which responded to a visual stimulus alone in AI. Nine units out of 34 units (26.5 %) increased or decreased their auditory responses significantly by a visual stimulus (Mann-Whitney U test, p < 0.100). The effects produced by the visual stimulus changed depending on the distance between the auditory and the visual stimuli. For entire units, the effects were the largest when the auditory and the visual stimuli were completely overlapped. This tendency holded even excluding these 9 neurons. Results indicate that the information from the of the AI neurons detect the temporal time delay.
