Listener-oriented adaptation of vowel devoicing in dialogues by Kinki dialect speakers
Rei Yasuda, Ryoko Hayashi (Kobe Univ.) SP2009-150
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Vowel devoicing in Japanese is thought to have listener adaptive characteristics. Speakers tune their performance according to communicative and situational demands. Kinki dialect speakers, however, generally produce less vowel devoicing in speech production than Tokyo dialect speakers. It is not known to what extent Kinki speakers “tune” their vowel devoicing to the dialect of the listener. In the present study, three types of dialogues were recorded and analyzed: 1) dialogues between Kinki dialect speakers, 2) dialogues of a Kinki dialect speaker and a Tokyo dialect speaker, and 3) dialogues of a Kinki dialect speaker and a foreign student. The result shows that Kinki dialect speakers produce more vowel devoicing if they speak to Tokyo dialect speakers or to foreign students compared with Kinki dialect speakers. The result demonstrates that vowel devoicing in Kinki dialect has listener adaptive characteristics.
