Auditory illusory continuity behaviorally found in Mongolian gerbils

(in English) Auditory system of human is capable of recognizing sound even if the sound is partially interrupted by noise burst. This phenomenon is known to be observed in perception of not only the voice but also the simple sound. This illusion for auditory perception is called “the auditory illusory continuity”. This is confirmed now in human and the monkey. We investigated the auditory illusory continuity from a behavioral approach that used a reward GO/NOGO task in Mongolian gerbils, and aimed to establish a new model animal. As a result, gerbils responded to discontinuous tone burst occluded by intense noise, as if responding to the complete tone burst. This suggested that the auditory illusory continuity is a phenomenon which is commonly found in mammals.
