A vocal fold model including acoustic effects of the supra- and subglottal systems

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Vocal fold vibration is influenced not only by acoustic characteristics of the supraglottal system (vocal tract) but also by the subglottal system (trachea, bronchi, and lungs). The glottal flow, calculated in discrete time steps in computer simulation, is reflected from the supra- and subglottal systems, causing the pressure to change just above and below the glottis, and these pressure changes are necessary for calculating the glottal flow at subsequent time steps. In this article, we formulated and described how the glottal flow and pressure changes in the two-mass and two-dimensional models are calculated by using the reflection function obtained from the input impedance of the system. When the subglottal system was incorporated for the vowel /a/, the subglottal pressure varied by more than 500 Pa, and the volume flow reduced by 17 %
