Comparison of Routing and Wavelength Assignment Optimization in Optical Packet Switching Networks

(in English) In optical packet switching networks, packet contention occurs at a switching node whenever two or more packets try to reach the same output port of the node at the same wavelength, consequently network performance in terms of the packet loss rate and fairness decreases. In previous studies, an effective wavelength assignment mechanism named Least Congestion Wavelength Assignment (LCWA) was proposed to improve the network performance. This method takes the traffic distribution information into account. Based on the previous studies which merely focus on the wavelength assignment calculation, in this paper, we investigate two approaches of optimizations for integrating routing and wavelength assignment. One is a separated optimal routing and wavelength assignment, and the other is a jointed optimal routing and wavelength assignment. Simulation results show that, with limited number of wavelength resources, two approaches have the same performance; with increased number of wavelength resources, the jointed optimization outperforms the separated optimization in terms of packet loss rate. In addition, both approaches can improve the fairness performance dramatically compared to previous LCWA which employs random routing.
