An Indoor Localization in NLOS Environments Using Outlier Detection Based on Grouping of Sensors for Sensor Networks

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) One of major localization algorithms uses Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI).
A troublesome problem in indoor RSSI based localization is NLOS (Non Line of Sight) environments. In NLOS environments, RSSI becomes smaller than actual value and the location estimation accuracy degrades. In most of the current indoor localizations using RSSI, it is necessary to obtain a radio propagation characteristic by prior measurements of relations between RSSI and a distance. These prior experiments are not favorable, because measurements at every place take a lot of cost and time. To prevent cumbersome measurements, we previously proposed a localization algorithm that estimates the parameters of a radio propagation characteristic besides a source location. This algorithm has no need to measure a radio propagation characteristics, because it estimates the parameters of a radio propagation characteristic. However, this algorithm does not mitigate the influences of NLOS environments. In this research, we propose an RSSI based localization without prior measurements in NLOS environments. This algorithm uses grouping of sensor nodes and sets threshold to RSSI of each group to distinguish NLOS sensor nodes by the sensor groups. We evaluate a calculation amount and location estimation accuracies of the proposed algorithm by computer simulations and experiments.
