Analysis of Network Dynamics by Viscoelastic Material Model

(in English) Packet losses and packet arrival delays often spoil the user-perceived quality of video that is transmitted over a best-effort IP network. Although streaming video with an appropriate video bitrate and FEC redundancy is effective against this problem, it requires a technique to estimate the goodput, namely, the traffic rate that can pass through end-to-end networks. Concerning this issue, a number of techniques to estimate the available bandwidth, which is defined as a difference between the physical link bandwidth and cross-traffic rate, have been studied. However, the available bandwidth does not conform with the network goodput because it does not consider a cross-interaction among the traffic. In this paper, we point out that the dynamics of the goodput has the viscoelasticity, and propose a method to analyze the dynamics by a viscoelastic material model. The results of simulation using ns-2 showed that the viscoelastic material model enable to analyze the dynamics with an accuracy rate of about 80%.
