A Reflectarray Antenna for Millimeter-wave Imaging

(in English) A 60-GHz band electrically steerable reflectarray antenna has been fabricated and evaluated with a view to applying it to an millimeter wave imaging system. Each reflecting element on the reflectarray was printed on a dielectric substrate and had a rectangular microstrip patch and a stub loaded with a single PIN diode. The reflection phase was changed by 159$^\circ$ in accordance with the on/off state of the PIN diode; namely, the element worked as a single-bit phase shifter with simple structure. A reflectarray was fabricated using 40 $\times$ 40 reflecting elements with each spaced at 0.7$\lambda$. The experimental results were in good agreement with the simulations for the radiation patterns and the antenna gain. In addition, the capability of steering the antenna beam within 25$^\circ$ from the broadside was confirmed, and the response time of the beam steering was measured as 20 $\mu$s. As a result, the reflectarray antenna has a potential to be applied to millimeter-wave imaging.
