A Study of Nonverbal Cues and Atmosphere in Three-Person Conversation

(in English) This study experimentally investigated relationships between such nonverbal behaviors as degree of speech, hand gestures, head direction and body distance, and subjective evaluation of an activity of atmosphere created during a three-person conversation, in order to establish a technique for automatically estimating atmosphere in interpersonal communication. This study also investigated effect of information (topic) presentation by a display located in the conversation situation. Three participants who were the same generation and met for the first time talked for 8 minutes overall and then rated the activity of atmosphere of their own conversation presented by video every two minutes. Out results showed that the degree of speech and the hand gestures had a high correlation with subjective atmosphere while the head movement and the speech bias had a low correlation. Our results also revealed that the information presentation affected conversation and these correlations.
