An analysis of rubber hand illusion when rubber hand shape or hand posture is changed
Koshiro Yamamoto, Naohiro Fukumura (Toyohashi Univ. of Tech.) NC2009-117
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Rubber Hand Illusion (RHI) is an experiment to investigate the body ownership by integrating tactile and visual information. Watching a rubber hand being stroked synchronously with one’s own unseen hand causes the rubber hand to be attributed to one’s own body. In this study, we conducted the following two experiments to investigate the change of body image when RHI induces the change of body ownership. At first, the change in the body image was investigated when the rubber hand shape was changed. As a result, it is suggested that when strong RHI is induced, the brain recomposes own body shape image to the object shape. Next, the change in the body image was investigated when posture of participant's hand and rubber hand does not correspond. The result of measuring the reaction time lag suggests the change of own hand posture image.
