Event-Related Desynchronization of Spontaneous Rhythm Caused by Anticipation of Collision

(in English) We investigated the modulation of spontaneous brain rhythm of magnetic fields of alpha band associated with anticipation of collision. Participants (n=11) were presented with visual stimulus of a black indeterminate form, which expanded with time to imitate a collision, on a grey background. As a control, two kinds of stimuli were presented; one was a uniform background, the brightness of which decreased with time, and the other was the black indeterminate form that changed in size in a random manner. In addition, a cue stimulus was given two seconds before the stimulation in order that subjects anticipated each stimulus. During the anticipation period, the amplitude of alpha band rhythm was smaller for the stimulus of collision than for the control stimuli. The result demonstrates that the stimulus for the anticipation of collision induced event-related desynchronization (ERD) of the brain activity of alpha band. In addition, We investigated whether it was possible to distinguish collision imitation stimulation from control by amount of amplitude modulation of α band of single trial. It aimed at the application development with BCI(Brain Computer Interface). As a result, the testee with the highest correct answer rate obtained the correct answer rate of 79%.
